Young Evangelical Influence: Brazil’s 8-Year-Old Preacher Captivates Millions

In Brazil, a young girl is emerging as a prominent figure in the Evangelical community, drawing in both church audiences and social media followers. Ester Souza, an 8-year-old kidney transplant survivor, is preaching to a weekly congregation at her parents’ church in Votuporanga, São Paulo, while also capturing the attention of millions online.

Delivering sermons derived from her own life experiences, she speaks to a diverse audience of around 50 people, blending both adults and children, as reported by The Washington Post. Her mother documents these sermons, sharing them on Ester’s social media accounts, where she has amassed nearly 2 million followers. One video alone has reached over 11 million views.

Ester’s preaching journey began after overcoming a critical illness. Diagnosed with kidney failure in 2020, she spent two months hospitalized during the pandemic when her parents couldn’t be by her side. Ester later recounted an encounter with a mysterious man in white who reassured her of her well-being. She underwent a successful kidney transplant in March 2021.

Initially, her parents believed Ester might pursue a career in gospel music, having recorded her singing since she was a toddler. However, in late 2019, she unexpectedly delivered a message during a family prayer meeting, quoting Psalm 91, although imperfectly. Her father, Lucas Souza, recalled her emphasis on trusting in God. Her story gained momentum in July 2024, when a video of her recounting David and Goliath’s tale went viral.

The rise of child preachers in Brazil correlates with the explosive growth of the Evangelical population, which increased from 6.5% in 1980 to over 26% today, according to Brazil’s national statistics institute, IBGE. This trend aligns with the broader emergence of child social media influencers, as highlighted by a 2015 New York Times feature on Alani Santos, who garnered international attention for her healing services.

Other young preachers, like Miguel Oliveira from Assembleia de Deus Avivamento Profético in Carapicuíba, are also attracting followers. However, his claims of curing diseases like cancer have sparked criticism, according to Fohla de S. Paulo.

Researchers Wania Mesquita and Vânia Morales Sierra emphasize the transformative impact of social media on the nature of child preaching, shifting content creation directly to digital audiences. Ester’s parents believe her compelling recovery and youthful sincerity resonate with listeners, though they avoid claims of miraculous healing to steer clear of sensationalism.

Ester’s mother, Adriana Souza, notes that people trust children for their perceived honesty. An 11-year-old church attendee expressed a preference for Ester’s sermons for their clarity. Outside of her religious activities, Ester enjoys spending time with her siblings and engaging in typical childhood pastimes like drawing and soccer.

The spotlight on child preachers also raises concerns about online harassment and the pressures of public life. Critics warn of the risks involved when young individuals become prominent figures on social media, a challenge faced by many in the spotlight.
