The upcoming World Cup tournament is set to make history, not just because of its scale but also due to the unique stories emerging from its expanded format. The tiny Caribbean island of Kurissau is poised to become the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for the World Cup, while Cape Verde ranks as the third smallest. This change is due to the introduction of a 48-team tournament, the largest in the World Cup’s 96-year history, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Despite initial resistance to FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s announcement of the expanded format, this change has sparked intriguing narratives before the tournament even begins. Newcomers like Uzbekistan and Jordan have secured their spots, while nations such as New Caledonia, Surinam, Kosovo, and Albania may join them through playoffs. Remarkably, Haiti will make a return after a 52-year absence, joined by long-missed teams like Scotland, Norway, and Austria, who haven’t qualified since 1998.

However, not every nation has benefited from the expansion. Italy faces the possibility of missing its third consecutive World Cup, a situation that has drawn criticism from its coach regarding the qualifying process. This is particularly noteworthy given that Europe has the most qualifying spots, with 16 available. Similarly, Nigeria, once a regular contender from Africa, will miss out for the second successive time.

The expanded World Cup promises to bring fresh dynamics when it kicks off in June and July next year. The potential for underdog teams to cause upsets has increased, and the gap between the traditional elite and emerging soccer nations appears to be narrowing. Italy’s challenges underscore that the dominance of soccer’s traditional powerhouses can no longer be assumed.
