Suspect Arrested After Nearly Five-Year Search in Washington, D.C. Pipe Bombing Case

A significant breakthrough has been made in the investigation of attempted pipe bombings in the nation’s capital, with authorities apprehending a suspect after an extensive search lasting almost half a decade. The suspect’s intentions remain under scrutiny as law enforcement officials continue their investigation.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, flanked by top law enforcement officials including FBI Director Kash Patel and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, shared details of the arrest during a press conference held at the Department of Justice. Brian Cole Jr. was taken into custody early Thursday morning, accused of planting pipe bombs near the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters in January 2021.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino emphasized the determination of the agency: “We were going to track this person to the end of the Earth,” but noted the suspect was found in Woodbridge, Virginia, a mere 23 miles from Washington, D.C.

Cole faces charges under 18 USC 844, specifically for the “use of an explosive device,” as noted by Bondi. Pirro added that Cole is also charged with “transporting an explosive device in interstate commerce” and attempting “malicious destruction by means of explosive materials.” Conviction could lead to a decade in prison for the former charge and five to 20 years for the latter, as outlined in the statute.

Bondi underscored that the case is still active, and further charges may be forthcoming. No motives have been disclosed as of the press conference. She suggested that the delay in arrest might have been politically motivated, asserting that no new information had emerged to lead to the arrest, but rather “good diligent police work and prosecutorial work.”

FBI Director Patel highlighted the broader implications of the case: “When you attack American citizens, when you attack our institutions of legislation, when you attack our nation’s capital, you attack the very being of our way of life.” He assured the public of ongoing efforts to ensure national safety under current leadership.

The arrest links back to surveillance footage showing a masked individual in a gray hoodie and Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes placing the bombs on the evening of January 5, 2021. These devices were later found on January 6, during the infamous Capitol riot. While they did not detonate, the bombs were equipped with timers and other components indicative of a design meant to harm numerous individuals, as explained by Patel.

Details from the criminal complaint reveal that Cole, 30, acquired materials for constructing the bombs over 2019 and 2020. Critical evidence includes cell phone data and sightings of his 2017 Nissan Sentra near the bomb sites. At the time of his arrest, Cole resided with his parents and was employed at a bail bondsman’s office.
