A Christian primary school teacher has found himself at the center of a debate after being dismissed and prohibited from working with children, following a remark about Britain’s religious identity to a Muslim pupil.

The incident, reported by The Telegraph, unfolded when the teacher, whose identity remains undisclosed, addressed students using the sinks in the boys’ restroom for foot washing. The school, which does not affiliate with any religion, enforces a ban on such activities outside designated areas, including a specific prayer room.

Allegedly, the teacher reminded a student of the prohibition and suggested that those dissatisfied with the school’s regulations might consider attending an Islamic school located a mile away. He also noted Britain’s status as a Christian country, with a state church under the King’s leadership.

In the aftermath, the teacher sought to instruct his year six class on tolerance, reportedly mentioning the minority status of Islam in the UK. Following these events, he faced suspension in March of the previous year, leading to his eventual dismissal. By April, he had been referred to the safeguarding board and the Metropolitan police.

Although a police investigation into potential hate crime allegations yielded no results, the teacher initially faced a work ban due to claims of emotional harm stemming from his remarks. This ban was later overturned upon appeal, and the teacher is now pursuing legal action against the local authority.

Lord Young, Director of the Free Speech Union (FSU), which backs the teacher, commented, “This teacher lost his job and almost ended up being barred from the profession for life just because he pointed out to a class of Muslim schoolchildren that the national religion of England is Anglicanism.”

He further stated, “Things have reached a pretty pass in this country if a teacher can be branded a safeguarding risk because he says something that’s incontestably true. If he’d claimed that Islam is the official religion of England, even though that’s not true, I doubt he would have got into any trouble.”
