Tragic Incident in Uganda Highlights Religious Tensions

In a devastating event that underscores ongoing religious tensions, an evangelist in Uganda was killed following a Christian-Muslim dialogue session. Konkona Kasimu, who had converted from Islam, was renowned for his deep knowledge of both the Bible and the Quran, and had become a prominent figure in interfaith discussions across various Ugandan districts.

His latest engagement, an open-air dialogue organized by New Eden Church, took place in Busia town from December 8 to 12. Kasimu led the event with support from a team of evangelists, aiming to foster understanding and convert individuals to Christianity. However, the final day saw several Muslim attendees choosing to embrace Christianity, a move that escalated tensions.

Due to safety concerns, Kasimu and his team were provided temporary shelter by local Christians. On the evening of December 12, they departed for Iganga, some 67 miles southwest of Mbale. The journey turned perilous when, around 6:30 p.m., they were intercepted by four men in Islamic clothing near the Nakalama swamp.

Recheal Kyakuwa, who was traveling with Kasimu, recounted the chilling encounter from her hospital bed in Iganga. Initially perceiving the men as needing help, the group soon realized the danger when one of the men recognized Kasimu as a participant from the Busia event. Kasimu was subsequently attacked and suffered a fatal head injury.

Kyakuwa herself was assaulted and lost consciousness, while the other two team members managed to escape. Kasimu’s death has left the Christian community in mourning, with many viewing it as a direct attack on his religious outreach efforts.

“Kasimu was killed because of advancing the Kingdom of God,” Pastor Jeremiah Kasowe of New Eden Church, Iganga, stated. “We have lost a great man who was well-versed in both the Quran and the Bible and used that knowledge to witness Christ to many people.”

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, though an official statement has yet to be released. This attack is one of several documented cases of persecution against Christians in Uganda, a country whose constitution guarantees religious freedom. Despite Muslims comprising less than 12% of the population, there are significant numbers in the eastern regions.
