For six remarkable years, a young student in China has exemplified what it means to be a true friend, carrying his disabled classmate on his back every single day to ensure he can attend school alongside his peers. The unwavering dedication of 12-year-old Xu Bingyang has touched hearts and demonstrated the extraordinary power of compassion.

A friendship that began in first grade
At Hebazi Town Central Primary School in Qingshen county, located in Meishan city of Sichuan Province in south-western China, Xu Bingyang began helping his classmate Zhang Ze when they were both in first grade. Now sixth-grade pupils, their bond has only strengthened over time.
Zhang Ze suffers from Myasthenia Gravis, a rare muscle condition diagnosed when he was just 4 years old. Sometimes referred to as “rag doll” disease, this condition robbed Zhang of all voluntary muscle control in his legs, making it impossible for him to walk independently.
Daily acts of service
The physical demands on Xu are significant, yet he approaches them with remarkable ease. “I weigh more than 40 kg (88 pounds) and Zhang Ze only weighs about 25 kg (55 pounds), so it’s okay for me to carry him,” Xu explained. He considers himself his friend’s “walking stick” and takes pride in this role.

Beyond transporting Zhang between classrooms, Xu’s assistance extends to numerous daily tasks. He helps Zhang during class transitions, retrieves his lunch, refills water bottles, and supports him during bathroom visits. Even simple activities like going to the toilet require Xu to hold Zhang’s hand or lift him to navigate the distance from classroom to restroom.
A grateful friend
Zhang Ze expressed deep appreciation for his devoted friend’s efforts. “Xu Bingyang is my best friend. Every day, he studies with me, chats with me, and plays with me. I thank him for looking after me like this every day,” Zhang said.

Standing alone in his commitment
Initially, another student joined Xu in helping Zhang, but that arrangement didn’t last. A teacher noted that the other boy discontinued his assistance, claiming he didn’t have sufficient spare time for play or study. Xu, however, never wavered in his commitment.
Teachers describe Xu as hardworking, mature, and down to earth. One teacher remarked, “For so many years, Xu has continued doing good deeds and never complained in front of the teachers and classmates.”
Humility and future aspirations
Perhaps most remarkably, Xu’s selfless actions remained unknown to his own family for quite some time. His mother only learned about her son’s daily acts of kindness through other people, as Xu never mentioned them at home.
Looking ahead, Xu has expressed his desire to continue his path of service. He wants to keep helping others in the future, contributing to society and maintaining his selfless approach to life.
