A Call for Justice: The Tragic Death of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso

The sudden and violent death of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso has sent shockwaves through religious communities across Africa. The Bishop of Quelimane in Mozambique was fatally shot at his residence on June 6, raising urgent calls for a thorough investigation into this grave violation of religious freedom and human dignity.
The attack occurred in the early morning hours when armed individuals infiltrated the bishop’s home in Quelimane. Despite ongoing investigations, the perpetrators remain unidentified, and their motives unclear, as reported by Aid to Christians in Need (ACN).
Condemnation of the murder has been widespread among church leaders throughout Africa. The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has urged Mozambican authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
SECAM’s statement highlighted the gravity of the crime: “This heinous act, committed against a pastor of God’s people, constitutes not only an attack on the life and dignity of a devout servant of the Gospel, but also an assault on the fundamental values of peace, justice, human dignity, and religious freedom – essential principles for the well-being and development of any society.”
They further emphasized that no religious leader, regardless of their faith, should be subjected to violence. SECAM reiterated the necessity of protecting religious leaders who dedicate their lives to community service, reconciliation, and education.
The organization also underscored the critical importance of religious freedom, stating: “Religious freedom is a fundamental human right and a pillar of any democratic and peaceful society.”
In light of these events, SECAM has called for a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation to uncover the truth, insisting that “The people of Mozambique, the Catholic Church, and the International Community deserve the truth.”
Bishop Afonso, aged 54, was a prominent figure within the Catholic Church, both locally and internationally. The National Criminal Investigation Service of Mozambique revealed that the attackers managed to breach the property by scaling the perimeter wall and disabling the security system.
Investigations indicate that the bishop was shot in the chest inside a corridor of his residence using AK-M assault rifles. Bishop Afonso was ordained in 2002 and had a distinguished career, including serving in the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelisation. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Maputo in 2023 and later became the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira.
The Catholic community in Mozambique and beyond has been deeply grieved by his passing. During a visit to Spain on June 7, Pope Leo XIV expressed his sorrow and offered prayers for the people of Mozambique and the Diocese of Quelimane, calling for peace and an end to violence.
This tragedy unfolds amid ongoing instability in parts of Mozambique, marked by an Islamist insurgency in the northern regions since 2017, leading to numerous deaths and the displacement of over a million people. However, there has been no official suggestion of a connection between the insurgency and the bishop’s murder. The investigation into Bishop Afonso’s death continues.
