In a country where abortion laws vary widely from state to state, a new survey sheds light on where each state stands regarding life issues. The latest “Life List” by Americans United for Life (AUL) ranks the states, revealing both the most and least pro-life regions across the United States.

For the sixth year in a row, Arkansas claims the title of the most pro-life state. According to the AUL report, Arkansas tops the list due to its comprehensive policies that span from conception to natural death, including laws on abortion, bioethics, and end-of-life care.

Following Arkansas, Louisiana ranks as the second most pro-life state with Indiana, Oklahoma, and Mississippi completing the top five. States like South Dakota, Arizona, Kentucky, Idaho, and Tennessee also feature prominently, each with their own policies promoting life-affirming values.

Conversely, Oregon is identified as the least pro-life state, mirrored by New Jersey and Vermont, which had held the last position the previous year. The bottom rankings are rounded out by states such as Hawaii, Washington, and New York, which maintain policies less restrictive on abortion.

At a celebratory event in Little Rock, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders recognized the significance of the state’s ranking. “Pro-life is whole life, and I’m proud that for the past six years, Arkansas has ranked number one in the nation — not just in protecting the unborn, but in preserving life from conception to natural conclusion,” she stated in a statement.

Under Sanders’ administration, Arkansas has enacted several measures to reinforce its pro-life stance. These include a near-total abortion ban, exceptions made solely to save the mother’s life, and a prohibition on abortions based on the unborn’s race. Additionally, significant funds have been allocated to support women facing unplanned pregnancies and to enhance the state’s foster care and adoption systems.

Jerry Cox, President of the Arkansas Family Council, acknowledged the efforts of local legislators, stating, “Arkansans should be proud of their state legislators for passing the best laws in the nation when it comes to protecting unborn children, the elderly, the disabled, and the terminally ill,” in a statement.

As the nation looks to the future of pro-life advocacy, Cox emphasizes the broader mission, “Being pro-life is about much more than opposing abortion. We are focused on helping women and families with unexpected pregnancies, and we are making sure our laws respect and protect innocent human life at every stage from conception until natural death.”
