Church Attendance in Australia Sees Gradual Recovery Post-Pandemic

In a landscape marked by shifting cultural and social dynamics, Australian churches are witnessing a slow yet steady resurgence in weekly attendance as communities recover from the disruptions caused by COVID-19. Despite this promising trend, attendance has not yet rebounded to the levels seen at the start of the 21st century.

The recently unveiled Church Pulse Check Panel provides a detailed look at church attendance across Australia, offering critical insights into the state of congregational health. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide church leaders with reliable data as they navigate changes in religious engagement.

Developed by NCLS Research, a group dedicated to analyzing trends within Australian Christianity, the 2025 Church Pulse Check aims to go beyond anecdotal narratives. “The 2025 Pulse Check allows us to move beyond anecdotal evidence and provide a faithful, data-driven report on the health and resilience of our local churches,” a spokesperson for the project noted.

Findings from the survey, which covered 1,005 local churches across various denominations in October and November 2025, indicate that approximately 1.35 million Australians attend church each week. This figure highlights the enduring role of congregations in both community and spiritual life, even amid rising secularization.

Although the 2025 Pulse Check demonstrates a recovery to 89% of the attendance levels recorded in 2001, it also underscores the ongoing challenges faced by churches in regaining full participation. Researchers suggest that the gap indicates a transitional phase as churches adapt their ministry models while preserving core theological values.

This survey marks the start of a permanent local Church Pulse Check Panel, designed to track the same churches over time for more accurate long-term analysis. Organizers stress the importance of continuous collaboration with denominational leaders to maintain a representative sample of Australia’s diverse church landscape.

As part of this initiative, church leaders were invited to join the long-term panel, with many already committing to participate. More congregations are expected to be included in the future to ensure comprehensive denominational and geographic representation.

The data gathered aims to support pastors, denominational leaders, and local churches in identifying emerging trends and planning future ministry efforts effectively. A comprehensive report on the 2025 Church Pulse Check is anticipated in the coming weeks, offering deeper insights into faith commitments and church life in Australia.
