The Baptist community is currently facing a significant challenge as the recruitment of church ministers has seen a sharp decline over the past ten years. In response, Baptist leaders are actively seeking strategies to reverse this trend and bolster the number of ministers.

Tim Fergusson and Lee Johnson, Co-Leaders of the Ministries Team within the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB), have spearheaded research into the issue. Their findings, published in the Baptist Times, reveal a 16% decrease in the number of accredited ministers since 2014, not accounting for retirees. When including those who have shifted to missionary roles, the decline reaches 24%.

Describing the situation as “a sobering reality,” Fergusson and Johnson attribute part of the decline to a divine calling leading individuals away from pastoral roles. However, they also highlight systemic issues within the church that contribute to the problem.

Fergusson’s research indicates that younger members of the Baptist community exhibit a weaker grasp of discipleship, and often perceive church ministry as an unappealing career path. Additional concerns include uncertainties about the future of Baptist ministry in the UK and the demanding nature of ministerial training.

The co-leaders stress the urgent need for the denomination to actively cultivate the next generation of Baptist leaders. They warn that without intervention, the decline will worsen as more ministers retire in the coming years.

A significant part of their proposed solution involves empowering local parishes to take initiative. “Every church has a responsibility,” they emphasized. “Those being formed as ministers need both opportunities to lead (and fail, learn and improve) and funds to pay for their training – again, every church has a responsibility.”

Existing ministers are also encouraged to participate actively in mentoring and supporting future leaders. To facilitate this, the Ministries Team has established a working group dedicated to creating and enhancing pathways to leadership within the Baptist community.
