New BBC Series to Illuminate the Life of Jesus Christ with Fresh Perspectives
In a groundbreaking move, the BBC plans to delve into the life of one of history’s most influential figures with a new four-part series. This ambitious production promises to weave together historical research, archaeological findings, and expert insights to bring a comprehensive portrayal of Jesus Christ.
Set to broadcast on BBC Television and BBC iPlayer in 2027, the series will offer a detailed exploration of Jesus’ historical context. It will integrate Gospel narratives with the latest archaeological and academic research, enhanced by modern technological innovations.
The project has received the green light from the BBC’s Head of Specialist Factual, Jack Bootle, along with Daisy Scalchi, the BBC’s Head of Religion and Ethics for Television. Production is being handled by Wonderhood Studios.
Daisy Scalchi remarked on the BBC’s dedication to religious programming, stating, “This series is testament to the BBC’s commitment to religious programming that deepens our understanding of each other and the world around us.”
Scalchi emphasized Jesus’ unparalleled recognition and influence, highlighting that the series aims to reexamine historical evidence using current scholarship and newly uncovered insights.
The program will blend cinematic storytelling with historical analysis, delving into the political, social, cultural, and religious environments of Jesus’ time as well as the genesis of the Christian movement.
In addition to insights from esteemed historians, the series will include viewpoints from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim scholars, reflecting on the lasting impact of Jesus’ life and legacy.
The series is being executive produced by Rory Wheeler, Samantha Anstiss, and Tom Garton, with Annabel Hobley as showrunner and Owen Gower directing.
Creative director at Wonderhood Studios, Tom Garton, has stated that the series aims to situate Jesus within the historical framework that influenced his ministry and the rise of Christianity.
According to Garton, the series will not only illuminate the people, conflicts, and beliefs of the first century but also offer “ambitious” cinematic storytelling on a subject that continues to influence the modern world. He noted, “Few lives have shaped the world as profoundly as that of Jesus Christ and, for Christians, he is far more than a figure of history: he is the Son of God.”
