Churches in Lancashire are being urged to prepare for a potential rise in interest towards Christianity among young individuals and families. This call to action comes from the Bishop of Blackburn, who has noted positive signs of a spiritual “rebirth” as more people explore faith.

Rt Rev Philip North emphasized the need for Christians to step beyond the narrative of decline and confidently engage in spreading the Gospel. This comes as churches are encountering newcomers who initially explored Christianity through online platforms.

Addressing the Diocese of Blackburn’s Synod on October 10, Bishop Philip underscored the importance of being ready to welcome individuals seeking to learn about the Christian faith.

His remarks anticipate the upcoming launch of a new diocesan vision, Joyful Followers of Jesus, aimed at promoting evangelism, enhancing discipleship, and inspiring future Christian leaders.

Highlighting the historical perspective, Bishop North remarked, “For 150 years the story of Western Christianity has been one of decline and withdrawal. Even as Christians we have come to inhabit that narrative ourselves. But every two hundred years, the French crop up and remind us that the fire of the Gospel is inextinguishable.”

He pointed out that similar signs of renewed interest are visible in Lancashire, with reports of new families and young adults attending church services after exploring faith online.

Furthermore, the bishop noted the inclusion of adults in confirmation services alongside children, signifying public affirmations of faith. “And that story is an increasingly common one across the county,” he stated. “There is a rebirth.”

This movement follows a series of events celebrating the Diocese of Blackburn’s centenary, which included a mission weekend where parishes encouraged community participation and introduced people to Christianity.

Bishop Philip praised the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by clergy and lay leaders during these celebrations.

The vision, Joyful Followers of Jesus, developed over two years, will be inaugurated at the next Synod meeting at St Michael’s School in Chorley. It aims to help individuals discover Jesus, motivate youth, spread the Christian faith, and nurture Christian leaders.

Bishop North called for an ambitious and life-changing approach to the future, urging Christians to impact communities positively with hope.

“As we launch this new vision, let’s be ambitious for the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” he urged the attendees. “Our task as Christians is not to tinker about and leave everything roughly the same. For us also, our task is to change lives and fill communities with hope.”

Central to this vision is prayer, with parishes encouraged to appoint “Prayer Enablers” to support the strategy’s implementation.

Despite challenges facing organized religion, Bishop North urged congregations to remain steadfast in their mission.

“There are so many aspects of our common life that could drag us down,” he noted. “We have a Gospel to proclaim that Lancashire needs to hear. The words we speak are words of life.”

As the launch of Joyful Followers of Jesus draws near, the Diocese of Blackburn is set to build on its centenary celebrations, aiming to inspire churches across Lancashire to share their faith with renewed confidence and purpose.
