Nun Survives Stabbing Attack in Zagreb, Investigation Underway
A Catholic nun in Zagreb, Croatia, is recovering after a violent attack where a man reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar” before stabbing her. The incident has prompted a criminal investigation by local authorities.
Sister Marija Tatjana Zrno, aged 34, was attacked in the Malešnica neighborhood last Friday. Following the incident, she was rushed to the Sisters of Charity University Hospital for treatment, as reported by Narod.hr. The injuries were sustained in her abdominal area, but hospital officials confirmed she is not in critical condition despite rumors circulating on social media.
Police have launched a criminal probe into the incident, treating it as a grave offense. The Zagreb Police Department has yet to make any arrests or provide an official motive, according to Jabuka.tv.
Unofficial reports suggest that the attacker may have been a migrant, and religious slogans were allegedly shouted during the assault. Sister Zrno was attacked outside her convent and was later assisted to the hospital by someone she knew.
Originally from Šujica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sister Zrno belongs to the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul and resides at a convent in Zagreb. She is also a religious education teacher at a local primary school.
In addition to her religious duties, Sister Zrno is a passionate football enthusiast and is known for her involvement with Laudato TV, where she hosted football-related programs. She supports several international clubs such as Real Madrid and Juventus, and her Croatian favorite, Hajduk Split, due to her Herzegovinian heritage.
She co-founded a prayer group, “Rosary for the Fiery Ones,” alongside Father Ivan Dominik Iličić, focusing on events like the World Cup. This included organizing prayer gatherings, one of which was attended by the grandmother of Croatian player Ivan Perišić, as mentioned by Narod.hr.
Sister Zrno has communicated directly with Croatian national coach Zlatko Dalić about these prayer sessions, and she has commended the national team for their sportsmanship and respect towards competitors.
