In a tragic incident in Lebanon, Father Pierre El Rai, a Catholic priest, has lost his life following an attack involving an Israeli artillery tank. This event highlights the ongoing tensions and violence that have enveloped the region, affecting various communities.
Father Pierre El Rai, aged 50, was attempting to assist his parishioners in Qlayaa when an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) tank targeted the house he was in. Unfortunately, as he was inside, the tank fired again, leaving him severely injured. Despite efforts to save him, Father El Rai succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, as reported by Aid to the Church in Need.
Reacting to the devastating news, Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai, leader of the Maronite Church in communion with Rome, mourned the loss, describing Father El Rai’s death as a testament to his love and commitment to his priestly duties.
The Patriarch emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions, stating, “The martyrdom of a priest dedicated to the service of God and his people, steadfast in his pastoral mission alongside the faithful in times of hardship, is a profound wound in the heart of the Church.” He further stressed the importance of avoiding violence and urged a path of negotiation and dialogue.
In his address, the Patriarch condemned all acts of violence against civilians, religious figures, and places of worship in the region.
The incident occurs amidst a backdrop of rising hostilities involving Israel, Iran, the United States, and Hezbollah, posing significant threats to Christian communities in the area.
Recently, an Iraqi Christian community experienced a drone attack. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the premises had been evacuated. Although the attack’s origin remains unconfirmed, suspicions point towards a nearby US base or airport being the intended target.
This tragic event is not isolated. During conflicts in Gaza, Holy Family Church, the only Catholic church in the area, was struck by Israeli fire, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to Father Gabriel Romanelli. Earlier, two women seeking refuge in the church were also killed by sniper fire.
