Amid the thrumming beats and guitar riffs of the Download music festival, a unique presence was felt among the 90,000 attendees. This year, 45 chaplains from various denominations, including the Church of England and the Baptist Union of Great Britain, were part of the festival scene, offering a different kind of support and engagement.
Download, known for hosting legendary bands such as Guns & Roses, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park, has seen the regular involvement of chaplains only in the past six years. One of these chaplains, Rev Roy Monks from the Baptist Castle Donnington Community Church, shared insights with The Baptist Times about their experiences at the festival.
Rev Monks remarked that chaplains were “well received” by festival-goers, as they roamed the event grounds in distinctive high visibility vests. Their presence was not just for spiritual guidance but also practical assistance, offering directions and supporting those in need of medical help.
Beyond these immediate tasks, the chaplains organized a communion service and maintained a prayer team ready to address any arising concerns. Rev Monks emphasized, “God is certainly at work in this place. The conversations we have are many and varied but it’s clear to all of us that many are seeking … We had many amazing encounters.”
A notable highlight for the chaplaincy team was reuniting with two individuals they had prayed for at the previous year’s festival. These individuals had since joined a church and been baptized, and they returned to express their gratitude, even volunteering to assist in the next festival.
Looking ahead, the chaplains are preparing to extend their outreach to a series of smaller raves in Derby. Rev Monks expressed optimism about this new venture, stating, “We feel God has opened a door to these places because his heart is moved by the issues and the deep searching so many seem to have.” He encouraged others interested in this ministry to join their efforts.
