China Retaliates with Tariffs and Google Investigation Amid Trade Tensions

In a significant escalation of trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies, China has unveiled a comprehensive response to new U.S. tariffs. The retaliatory measures, announced Tuesday by China’s Ministry of Commerce, target key American exports while simultaneously launching an antitrust investigation into tech giant Google.

China’s multi-pronged response to U.S. tariffs

The Chinese government has implemented a series of countermeasures, including a 15% tariff on American coal and liquified natural gas products. Additionally, a 10% tariff will be applied to U.S. crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-displacement vehicles.

In their official statement, Chinese authorities criticized the U.S. approach, stating, “The US’s unilateral tariff increase seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization. It is not only unhelpful in solving its own problems, but also damages normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the US.”

Timing and diplomatic developments

The Chinese response coincides with the implementation of President Donald Trump’s 10% tariff on Chinese goods. However, potential diplomatic efforts may still influence the situation, as Trump is expected to engage in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming days.

Google investigation launched

In a move that appears strategically timed, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced an antitrust investigation into Google. While the announcement avoided direct reference to the trade dispute, its timing – minutes after the U.S. tariffs took effect – suggests a connection to the broader trade tensions between the two nations.
