Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Starvation Threatens Thousands Amid Conflict
As the conflict in Gaza continues, concerns over a growing humanitarian crisis have intensified. Christian Aid has issued a stark warning that many more lives are at risk of starvation unless immediate action is taken to end the hostilities and allow unrestricted aid into the region.
Recent reports indicate that 269 individuals, including 112 children, have succumbed to starvation in Gaza. The situation has escalated to the point where the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has declared a famine in Gaza City, attributing the dire conditions to human actions.
According to The Telegraph, an IPC assessment highlights the severity of the situation: “After 22 months of relentless conflict, over half a million people in the Gaza Strip are facing catastrophic conditions, characterised by starvation, destitution and death.”
This declaration has been met with denial from Israel’s authorities, with the Prime Minister asserting, “Israel does not have a policy of starvation.”
Katie Roxburgh, Christian Aid’s Programme Manager for Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, expressed that the IPC’s declaration is a confirmation of what many already knew. She remarked, “The people of Gaza already knew that they were living through a famine.”
Roxburgh shared harrowing accounts from colleagues on the ground, describing the severe impact of hunger: “Our colleagues describe the physical pain of hunger after months of surviving on a single small bowl of lentil soup each day. They describe family members passing out from fatigue and how malnutrition is causing their hair to fall out in clumps.”
She pointed to the Israeli blockade as a key factor contributing to the crisis and voiced strong opposition to military operations aimed at seizing control of Gaza City.
“Israel’s blockade of Gaza is responsible for this suffering and it is unconscionable that we are now seeing the start of military operations to take over a city in the grip of famine, pushing close to a million people from their homes and exposing them to immense danger,” Roxburgh stated.
She further emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning, “Our greatest fear is that unless the war in Gaza is quickly brought to an end, and aid is finally allowed to flood into Gaza unhindered, we are on the precipice of seeing hundreds more unnecessarily perish.”
In response to the crisis, Christian Aid has initiated an appeal and is encouraging individuals to participate in its #FastforGaza campaign, which involves fasting for 24 hours or another chosen duration once a week.
