In a case highlighting tensions between religious beliefs and educational policies, a Christian social media influencer has taken legal action against her former school employer. Gozen Soydag, a school counsellor, alleges her dismissal from St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls in North London was due to her social media posts supporting traditional Christian views on marriage.

Soydag, who has a significant presence on Instagram with 30,000 followers, claims her termination was a result of expressing beliefs about the sanctity of marriage and traditional family values. Her posts emphasized the importance of a nuclear family, the value of purity, and her perspective that wives should be submissive to their husbands.

The school reportedly informed Soydag that her views were “incompatible with the school’s ethos” and had caused “offence” to an anonymous complainant. Despite agreeing to take down one of the contentious posts, she was allegedly asked to leave the premises without pay, without the chance to bid farewell to students or colleagues, according to the Christian Legal Centre (CLC).

The legal proceedings are currently underway at the Watford Employment Tribunal, where Soydag is pursuing claims of wrongful dismissal and discrimination, asserting that the school infringed upon her human rights by penalizing her for her Christian beliefs.

Speaking prior to the hearing, Soydag expressed her surprise and disappointment at being dismissed. “I want to speak up now because traditional Christian marriage in this country is being broken, trampled on, and even marginalised, and what has happened to me really highlights that,” she remarked.

“It is wrong to fire someone because they believe in the institution of marriage. I believe it is wrong to fire someone because their beliefs don’t align with yours.” She further added, “There is so much talk about diversity in the workplace, yet in this instance, my beliefs and who I am as a Christian were completely excluded.”

Andrea Williams, the CEO of the Christian Legal Centre, condemned the school’s actions, stating, “This is another example of schools, which on the surface have a strong Christian ethos, panicking and capitulating to secular orthodoxy and the ‘offence’ of Christian marriage.”

Soydag’s case has garnered attention beyond the courtroom. In The Telegraph, commentator Celia Walden questioned the double standards in the treatment of different religious beliefs, writing, “Had Soydag been a Muslim, would they really have sacked her?”

St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls has been approached for their perspective on the matter.
