New Guidance on Transgender Students Elicits Mixed Reactions
The government’s updated guidance on handling transgender students in schools has sparked a range of responses from The Christian Institute (CI). While acknowledging some positive elements, the institute has expressed concern over certain aspects of the policy.
The guidance recommends the exclusion of biological males from female-only spaces and requires parental involvement when a child is transitioning. However, CI is critical of any school support for transitioning students.
According to the guidance, both primary and secondary school students will receive support to live as their chosen gender. Before any changes are made, schools must review available clinical evidence.
Social transition is described as an “active intervention” with potential psychological and long-term impacts on children. The guidance references the Cass Review, which indicates a higher likelihood of medical transition for those who socially transition early or without clinical advice.
The Cass Review highlights the necessity of clinical involvement in the decision-making process, advising on the risks and benefits of social transition. It states that such responsibilities should not fall on untrained school staff.
Schools are advised to consider whether external factors, such as health issues or neurodiversity, might influence a child claiming to be transgender. According to the Cass Review’s findings, primary schools should rarely support social transitioning.
John Denning, Head of Education at CI, stated, “Social transition is the co-opting of the school to affirm an untruth about a child’s sex, encouraging the child to reject the reality of their body. It can never be in the child’s best interest nor is it appropriate for schools to do it.”
Denning added, “It’s welcome that this guidance now guarantees single-sex spaces, ensures parents aren’t shut out of decision making, and prevents coercion of individuals against their conscience. But the Government should be taking a lead to protect children and the integrity of schools from this profoundly harmful ideology. The guidance should forbid schools from supporting social transition all together.”
