Firebomb Attack on Jewish Ambulances Sparks Outcry from Christian Leaders
In a disturbing incident that has stirred the community, four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were targeted in a firebomb attack in the early hours of Monday in Golders Green, London. This attack has drawn harsh criticism from Christian leaders, uniting them in condemnation.
The vehicles, operated by Hatzola, were set ablaze by three individuals, according to police reports. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has described the attack as an “abhorrent crime” and pledged to combat the rising tide of antisemitism, which has heightened fears among the Jewish population in the UK.
The militant group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, known for its alignment with Iran, has claimed responsibility for the attack through its Telegram channel, although the BBC noted that this claim lacks verification.
Sir Mark Rowley, the head of the Metropolitan Police, stated that authorities are “pursuing all lines of enquiry”. Despite the involvement of counter-terrorism officers, the incident is currently categorized as an antisemitic hate crime rather than a terror act.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, expressed solidarity with the Jewish community, stating, “My prayers are with the Jewish community after the appalling antisemitic attack on Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green. Such acts of violence, hatred and intimidation have no place in our society.”
Similarly, the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, condemned the attack as “a completely abhorrent and unjustifiable attack on the Jewish community and on all who are engaged in health care in this country,” emphasizing the need to stand against prejudice and violence.
Richard Moth, the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, called for unity, stressing, “I am shocked at the vandalism of Jewish charity Hatzola’s ambulances that serve the community in North London and condemn any attacks on faith communities.” He urged people of all faiths to promote mutual respect.
Golders Green, known for its significant Jewish population and numerous synagogues, has been served by the volunteer-run Hatzola charity since 1979.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reacted strongly, stating, “The antisemitic arson attack in Golders Green is horrifying. I’ve been in touch with Jewish community leaders this morning and will continue to do so throughout the day. An attack on our Jewish community is an attack on us all. We will fight the poison that is antisemitism.”
