Amid rising nationalist sentiments, the Church of England is taking a stand for unity. With a significant rally led by far-Right figure Tommy Robinson taking place in London, the bishops have published a prayer seeking divine protection against division and hatred within the UK.

The Bishops’ Working Group for Promoting Unity in our Nation, recently formed, released the prayer just prior to the rally. This prayer expresses gratitude for those who contribute positively to society. Bishop Martyn Snow, who heads the group, emphasized the importance of peace and reconciliation in today’s climate of anxiety and fear.

“We know that these are anxious and fearful times for many in our country, which makes the Church’s calling for peace and reconciliation all the more pressing,” Bishop Snow stated. He added, “I believe that we have much, as a country, for which we can be proud; much for which we can be grateful; and much to look forward to, if we learn from one another, respect one another, and work together for our shared future.”

The rally organized by Robinson drew approximately 60,000 participants, coinciding with a simultaneous pro-Palestine demonstration. According to a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police, the events were largely peaceful, with only a handful of arrests reported.

Notably, some attendees of Robinson’s rally carried wooden crosses, proclaiming “Christ is king.” This reflects findings from a Premier Christian News survey, indicating that about 25% of UK Christians resonate with nationalist ideologies.

During his speech, Robinson addressed issues such as the persecution of Nigerian Christians and encouraged political engagement among his followers. “Are you ready for the battle of Britain? 2029 we have an election. We’re not asking anyone to go out and fight, but this is the most important moment in our generation,” he declared.

Robinson urged his supporters to become active politically, stressing the importance of participating in the upcoming election. “We have to get political, we have to get involved. I’m not going to tell you which political party you need to join. We’re a cultural movement. I’m going to tell you that you have to join a political party,” he advised. He mentioned that involvement could be with any party, including Reform, Advance, Restore, or the Conservative party, emphasizing local political engagement.
