The Church of England is witnessing an unprecedented surge in interest, marking a new record in the number of Christmas services scheduled this year. This trend aligns with findings by the Bible Society, which indicate a “quiet revival” in Britain, driven largely by younger generations who are increasingly participating in church activities.

Supporting these observations, anecdotal evidence from across the nation points to a substantial uptick in attendance at Easter services earlier this year.

A recent survey conducted by Savanta for Tearfund reveals that 45 percent of British adults are planning to attend a church event or service during the Christmas season, reflecting a 40 percent increase compared to last year. This growing interest has prompted the Church of England to launch the Joy of Christmas campaign, designed to engage the public with videos, reflections, and devotional content throughout the festive period.

Additionally, the Church has published its inaugural Christmas picture book, The Grumpy Owl and Joy of Christmas, with an animated version available on YouTube.

The impact of these initiatives appears significant. The Church’s website, achurchnearyou.com, experienced an increase in views, reaching 891,000 on a recent Sunday, up from 743,000 the previous week. Current data shows 6,870 services tagged ‘Advent,’ surpassing last year’s total of 6,658, and 23,147 services tagged ‘Christmas.’ The Church anticipates the total number of Christmas services this year will “comfortably surpass” last year’s figure of 23,525.

Further evidence of engagement comes from a special video titled “Christmas isn’t cancelled,” which has garnered over two million views online, complemented by 2.4 million impressions from related social media posts.

The Church of England’s efforts are mirrored by a nationwide initiative involving around 2,000 churches from over 60 denominations. The Shine Your Light campaign aims to share the gospel with two million people through services and evangelistic events held in various public venues, including shopping centers, markets, and prisons.

Pastor Jonathan Oloyede, the founder of Shine Your Light, commented on the initiative, stating, “This Christmas, in a season of political and cultural tension, the Church is stepping out – into high streets, shopping centres, marketplaces and even sports grounds – to lift the name of Jesus.”
