Recent research reveals that nearly 25% of the UK population have turned to churches or Christian organizations for help over the past five years. Conducted by Opinium for Christians Against Poverty (CAP), the survey of 2,000 adults highlights the crucial role these institutions play in supporting communities.

Among the various forms of assistance, food provision tops the list, especially during the Christmas season, accounting for 16% of the support rendered. Mental health support follows closely, representing approximately 8% of the aid given. Assistance with employment, benefits, financial management, and toiletries are also significant components of the support offered.

Stewart McCulloch, CEO of CAP, commented on the challenging economic environment faced by many in Britain, stating, “Life is, and has been, very tough for millions of low-income households in recent years, with the price of essentials, such as food and energy, consistently rising and continuing to do so.”

McCulloch further emphasized the positive impact of local churches, saying, “At CAP, we see how when local churches show love in action in their local area, it strengthens the community, reduces poverty and transforms lives.”

The survey results indicate that London has the highest percentage of individuals who have either directly received or know someone who has received church assistance, with 52% acknowledging this support. Comparatively, Yorkshire follows with 29%, while southern England reports only 13% of adults accessing such aid.

Support from these organizations can vary widely in scale and impact. One notable example is Jade, a single mother of three, who overcame debt with CAP’s help. She shared her transformative experience, saying, “At the time, I felt like I just couldn’t do it anymore. I was on my own with three small children and I was thinking to myself, ‘How on earth am I going to sort this out?’ I called CAP and instantly they were like, ‘How can we help? Do you need food? Do you need an energy top-up?’ It really was the turning point in my life.”

Jade’s story underscores the spiritual and material benefits of CAP’s intervention, as she explained, “My son was really struggling, he had some medical issues. My local debt coach, Ben, and a befriender from my church offered to pray for him and he was healed. The issues just stopped. I suddenly realised that they prayed and he was healed, and that’s when I gave my life to Jesus.”

She concluded, “I fully believe Jesus exists. Being supported by CAP and Holy Trinity Church [Barnstaple] has completely transformed our lives,” illustrating the profound impact faith-based support can have on individuals and families in need.
