Commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Service and Reflection

Across the United States, churches are coming together to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day through various events and volunteer opportunities, celebrating the legacy of the iconic civil rights leader.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just a federal holiday marked by the closure of schools and businesses, but a chance for communities to engage in service projects that foster unity and support local needs.

In New Hope, Pennsylvania, Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church will be hosting its third annual day of service with a variety of activities, including a special presentation on the Bucks County Underground Railroad by Patricia L Mervine, a local author and historian.

Pastor Stephanie Templin Ashford expressed the church’s mission to embody unity in a divided world: “Jesus says that His greatest prayer is that ‘they may be one’… We hold our annual MLK Day of Service because we seek to be a united people who love God, love one another, and serve the world.”

Continuing the tradition for the 23rd year, Fifth Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, is organizing the 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration and Drum Major Awards. This event, initially delayed due to weather, will spotlight local volunteers and will be live-streamed from the church.

The collaboration involves the Urban Financial Services Coalition, Boaz & Ruth, and the Henrico chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, focusing on honoring unsung community heroes. “These individuals are truly keeping the dream of Dr. King alive,” stated the church in a press release.

Meanwhile, Shiloh Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, continues its tradition of service with several volunteer initiatives. Associate Pastor Octavia Stanton Caldwell shared plans to engage volunteers in local nursing homes, shelters, and juvenile centers, emphasizing the church’s commitment to community service inspired by Dr. King’s legacy.

The church also partners with other congregations and residents to assemble and distribute essential kits to various shelters. Caldwell expressed optimism about an increased volunteer turnout, reinforcing the church’s dedication to serving in memory of Dr. King’s contributions.
