With the cost of living rising, churches throughout England are taking action to assist parents in getting their children ready for school by offering free pre-loved uniform programs.

In Ely Cathedral, a “school uniform community wardrobe” initiative provides donated school clothing for local primary school students. This program allows parents to take items at no cost or contribute a donation if they choose, with a collection basket available near the cathedral’s entrance.

The outreach worker for children and families at the cathedral, Rev Sarah Newns, leads this effort, which is now in its second year. She shared, “I’m a mum as well, and I know the summer holidays are already a really expensive time of year.”

Rev Newns added, “And families struggle to fork out for new uniforms on top of that. We know there is plenty of uniform in great condition and people who’d like to give it away.” The wardrobe is set to reopen in late August, coinciding with a popular children’s event at the cathedral.

Similarly, in Cannock Chase, The Salvation Army is bringing back its “Pre-Loved Uniform Market” (PLUM) for another summer. This program offers free primary and secondary school uniforms and has been available all week at The Salvation Army in Hednesford. Staffordshire Libraries supported the initiative by collecting donations.

This effort is part of broader community support activities, with the Hednesford church also running a pay-as-you-feel Friendship café from 2pm to 5pm, Monday to Thursday. The church collaborates with the Trussell Trust’s Pye Green Foodbank to assist families in need.

From Ely to Cannock Chase, these church-driven programs demonstrate how simple gestures, such as sharing a blazer or a pair of trousers, can alleviate financial stress for families and bolster community relationships.
