Churches Embrace the Outdoors Amidst Unprecedented Heat

As the United Kingdom faces an unusually intense summer with five separate heatwaves, communities across the Diocese of Winchester are making innovative use of the warm weather by shifting church activities outside. This comes as the country grapples with the heat’s impact on the economy, agriculture, and public health.
In Boscombe, Pokesdown, and Southbourne, local churches joined forces for an event named “King’s Praise in King’s Park.” The gathering, one of several outdoor Christian events this season, included choir performances, music groups, and children’s activities, complete with free ice cream.
Rev Lorraine Kingsley shared with the Diocese of Winchester, “‘King’s Praise in King’s Park’ is the summer outreach of Churches Together in Boscombe, which is a vibrant group made up of many churches in our socio-economically deprived part of the UK.” She emphasized the mission of the church to communicate the gospel as good news and to embody God’s love in the community.
Another example is St Leonard’s Church in Sherfield on Loddon, which hosted its annual Songs of Praise in the garden of a local pub, The White Hart, and participated in community events like the Sherfield Fete with a tea and cake tent.
John Moule, a parish member, remarked on the church’s commitment to community engagement, stating, “At St Leonard’s, we pride ourselves on being open to all and having a family feel, but we do much more. As the community church for over 900 years, we take the message of Jesus beyond the walls and out to the surrounding estates and villages.” Highlighting the church’s proactive role, he added, “We have a saying in our church ‘Our Worship has finished … Let the service begin.’”
