When an armed man entered a Florida cellphone store demanding cash, 20-year-old clerk Nayara Goncalves didn’t respond with fear or panic. Instead, she chose to speak about her Christian faith, transforming what could have been a violent robbery into an extraordinary conversation captured entirely on surveillance cameras.

The would-be robber entered the store holding a gun and approached Goncalves with what seemed like reluctance. Store security footage documented the entire exchange between the young clerk and the armed stranger.

An unusual robbery attempt

The encounter began with the gunman expressing his own discomfort with the situation. “I really hate to do this,” he told Goncalves as he made his demand for money.

Rather than immediately complying in silence, Goncalves calmly walked toward the register while beginning to engage the man in conversation. The robber attempted to reassure her, telling her not to be afraid.

“I’m not,” she responded. “I’m just going to talk to you about the Jesus I have.”

A conversation about faith and hardship

The robber’s response was unexpected. “May God Bless you for that,” he said. “Just know in mind that I absolutely hate doing this… I’m embarrassed I have to do this and I have no choice.”

Goncalves continued speaking to the man about faith and offered encouragement. “Jesus got something way better for you,” she told him. “I don’t know what you are going through, but all of us are going through a hard time right now.”

The conversation revealed the desperation behind the robbery attempt. When Goncalves offered to help him find employment, the man revealed he already had a job. When she questioned why he was attempting robbery, he explained his circumstances: “Cause I’m going to be evicted if I don’t come up with $300.”

A change of heart

As the man looked at the money in the register, he initially wanted to take everything. However, when Goncalves explained that the missing money would be deducted from her own paycheck, his resolve crumbled.

“I don’t want to do that to you. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” he said.

Goncalves used the opportunity to offer spiritual guidance. “Jesus helps you, he can change your life. Go back to church. Find a job. Get real friends in church. Talk to a pastor, they can pray for you. You don’t need to do this, Jesus is coming soon,” she told the apologetic stranger.

Throughout the entire encounter, the young clerk maintained her composure, repeatedly apologized to by the would-be robber who ultimately left without taking any money.
