When words fail in moments of terror, sometimes a silent plea is all it takes—especially when someone is watching closely enough to notice. That’s exactly what happened when a Detroit gas station clerk became the lifeline for a teenage girl who had been kidnapped at gunpoint just half an hour earlier.
The terrifying ordeal began around 7 a.m. near Edwin and Brombach streets in Hamtramck, Michigan. A 16-year-old girl was simply waiting for her school bus when an armed stranger abducted her. According to Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat, the victim and her abductor had no prior connection.
“This is a random incident. This suspect could have driven anywhere, saw the opportunity and took advantage of it,” Farhat said.
A clerk’s observant eye
Approximately 30 minutes after the abduction, the suspect brought the teenager into a Sunoco gas station and instructed her to purchase cigarettes for him. It was at this critical moment that clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem sensed something wasn’t right.
“When he ask her to pay for the cigarettes, I stop and go there’s something wrong. And she mouthed talked to me, like with no sound, ‘help,'” Abohatem said.
Without hesitation, Abohatem stepped out from behind the protective glass barrier. He positioned himself between the girl and her captor, shielding her from danger. “I go out, I kick him out, I ask the girl go behind me,” he said.
Technology and quick action lead to rescue
While the dramatic rescue was unfolding at the gas station, the victim’s friends at Frontier International Academy were taking action of their own. They used a phone tracking app to locate her position and immediately provided that information to law enforcement.
Police officers arrived at the Sunoco station just as Abohatem was escorting the suspect outside. “I see the police outside. I point to him. I go that’s the guy,” he said.
Mayor Adam Alharbi revealed that the suspect had a history of rape charges. The combination of the teenager’s courage, the clerk’s awareness, her friends’ resourcefulness, and rapid police response brought this frightening incident to a safe conclusion.
