Concerns Mount Over Bethel Sydney’s Launch Amid Allegations Linked to Parent Church
With Bethel Sydney’s official unveiling just around the corner, attention is drawn to recent serious allegations tied to its parent church, Bethel Church in Redding, California. A complaint filed with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission has sparked concern regarding the new campus’s ongoing connections with the Redding megachurch. The complaint highlights the mishandling of sexual misconduct allegations against minister Shawn Bolz, raising questions on public safety and accountability.
The controversy stems from Bethel Church’s admission of failures in addressing misconduct claims against Bolz, which were publicly recognized by its leaders last month. This acknowledgment comes after the church reportedly confronted Bolz over five years ago, but distanced themselves from him when his responses were deemed unsatisfactory. “There is no doubt that Bethel Sydney is an extension of the Bethel Church, Redding California ministry,” the complaint stated, emphasizing the delayed disclosure of the allegations.
Matthew and Elizabeth King are at the helm as senior leaders of Bethel Sydney, which is set to launch on February 15. They were commissioned by Bill Johnson and other Bethel leaders in 2024. Bethel Sydney has expressed its excitement for the upcoming dedication service, where Johnson is expected to participate. “Following a powerful weekend at the Bethel Sydney Conference, we’re gathering again — this time as family — to dedicate this house to the Lord,” a statement from the church announced.
In addressing the relationship between the two churches, Pastor Matthew King explained that Bethel Sydney, while sharing core beliefs and networks with Bethel Redding, operates independently with its own governance and accountability frameworks. “Bethel Sydney is an independently governed Australian charity with its own board, constitution, and accountability structures,” King noted, stressing the church’s commitment to safeguarding.
Bethel Sydney has already implemented a comprehensive framework covering various safety and integrity aspects, including safeguarding, whistleblower protections, and grievance handling. Even before its formal launch, Bethel Sydney has been proactive in communicating with its community about the allegations and offering essential pastoral support.
The complaint against Bethel Sydney also pointed to other incidents within Bethel Church, including allegations against leader Ben Armstrong involving young adults. This has added to the scrutiny over Bethel Sydney’s handling of safeguarding protocols and transparency in leadership.
The complaint calls for Bethel Sydney to address these issues publicly, especially considering Australia’s stringent expectations for charity oversight. The lack of public statements from Bethel Sydney regarding these admissions, as alleged in the complaint, raises concerns about the church’s governance and risk management practices.
