In Northern Iraq, Palm Sunday is traditionally marked with vibrant celebrations, where the streets come alive with palm branches waving and songs filling the air, celebrating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.
Participants, spanning from joyful children to contemplative elders, typically gather, waving olive leaves and small flags, declaring “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, Hallelujah.”
Women and girls don their traditional, glittery attire, while men and boys wear clothing reflecting their heritage. The occasion unites thousands of Christians, who often follow the cross in a communal display of faith.
Despite these cherished traditions, ongoing regional conflicts have halted these public gatherings, which are significant events in the Christian calendar.
The regional instability, exacerbated by Iranian-backed militias attacking areas like the Kurdistan Region, home to many Christians, has led to fear and uncertainty among the community.
As a consequence, all recognized church denominations have canceled public celebrations, citing “pastoral responsibility” to safeguard the community, according to Bishop Mar Benedictus Younan, Syriac Catholic Archbishop of Mosul.
He urges church leaders to encourage congregations to engage in the feast through faith, prayer, and solidarity, while avoiding public displays of joy as a gesture of empathy for those suffering due to the war.
While church-based Palm Sunday services will continue, festivities will be confined to church premises. The same applies to Easter Masses and celebrations the following week.
A local Christian woman expressed her sorrow, saying, “This year I feel sad, discouraged and disappointed because we can’t celebrate as we used to.” Her sentiments reflect the pervasive impact of the conflict on the community.
Iraqi Christians’ Call for Global Prayer
Christians in Iraq are reaching out to believers worldwide, seeking prayerful support:
- Pray for a swift end to the hardships of war.
- Pray for peace to take root, allowing dialogue to triumph over violence.
- Pray for Iraqi congregations to embrace the resurrection with hope, forgiveness, and the strength to bear witness to Jesus Christ.
