Crisis Deepens in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Amid Rebel Conflict
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently facing an escalating humanitarian crisis, as over 2,000 individuals have lost their lives since the M23 rebels took control of Goma, a significant city in the eastern part of the country.
This conflict has resulted in the displacement of millions and left thousands injured. The M23 group is reportedly supported by Rwanda, which is accused of seeking to annex the mineral-rich regions of eastern DRC. Conversely, Rwanda has charged the DRC with backing anti-Rwandan militias and harboring those responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
On the ground, the conditions are dire. Father Marcelo Oliveira, a Catholic missionary, described the situation as increasingly desperate. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and even refugee camps have become targets for attacks.
Father Marcelo, speaking to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), a Catholic charity, highlighted the challenges in distributing aid, exacerbated by the closure of Goma’s airport. The airport’s control tower has been damaged, and its equipment stolen, complicating efforts to deliver emergency assistance. Additionally, unexploded ordnances on the airport grounds necessitate a thorough clearance before operations can resume.
The violence has also penetrated Goma’s central prison, where over a hundred female inmates were raped after male prisoners escaped during the conflict and breached the women’s section. Many women and children have also fallen victim to the ongoing violence.
Despite these grim realities, Father Marcelo emphasized the Church’s commitment to standing by the people in their suffering. “The Church continues to be with the people, like the Good Shepherd who accompanies his flock and does not leave them to the wolves,” he stated. “So, our presence continues, with the people, trying to be a sign of hope in the midst of the anguish and the pain.”
He concluded, “We keep our eyes set on Jesus, leading his people.”
