Cornell University Incident Sparks Renewed Dialogue on Campus Issues

The recent allegations of gang rape at a fraternity house at Cornell University have reignited critical discussions surrounding issues such as consent, Greek life, and substance abuse on college campuses. This incident has prompted both men and women to engage in conversations about these pressing topics, with several male voices offering their perspectives.

Several individuals who have been actively engaged in discussing healthy masculinity and preventing violence against women shared their thoughts. Among them are Vichet Ou, a community organizer with the Masculinity Action Project; Tony Porter, cofounder of A Call to Men; Kyle Richard, representing the nonprofit It’s On Us; Josh Rubin, a senior at Colby College and contributor to the TikTok account Sex Ed for Guys; and Jason Barefoot, who writes the Substack Dad//Citizen.

Josh Rubin reflected on the emotional turmoil stirred by such incidents, saying, “I mean, there are just so many different emotions – certainly, deep sadness and frustration, certainly, about men’s inaction.” Similarly, Vichet Ou expressed his personal connection to Cornell and shared his feelings of sadness and anger over the situation.

Jason Barefoot described his discomfort with the attitudes he encountered during his college years, noting, “There were so many things about the details of that case that really just made my skin crawl.” Tony Porter emphasized the societal context, stating, “This case truly highlights that we continue to live in a society that’s a rape culture.”

Porter also highlighted the importance of male engagement in these discussions, both in community settings and within families. He mentioned, “For me, as a person that engages men in ending violence against women and girls, it’s an opportunity for me to lean in.”

These men also discussed the role of parenting in fostering respectful interactions among children. Vichet Ou, a parent himself, shared his hopes for raising children who understand respect and consent, while Jason Barefoot emphasized the importance of nurturing caregiving qualities in his young sons.

The conversation extended to the need for improved education on consent and the influence of cultural attitudes. Kyle Richard pointed out, “We do need to do better in terms of education and culture.” He stressed the importance of teaching active and enthusiastic consent from a young age.

Josh Rubin illustrated the variability of alcohol tolerance as a metaphor for understanding consent, saying, “My friend Max always uses this example where he’s like, I could have five beers and not be drunk at all, and Josh could have two and be totally intoxicated.” This highlights the necessity of clear education on consent.

Tony Porter concluded by highlighting a gap in parental assurance, noting, “Most parents can give me certainty that their son is not going to assault my daughter. But most parents cannot give me certainty that their son is going to intervene if something’s happening to my daughter.”

Through these discussions, it becomes clear that addressing these issues requires collective cultural shifts and ongoing education to foster a safer and more respectful environment for all students.
