In a recent turn of events, Christian musician Cory Asbury opted to remove a shirtless photo from his social media after it sparked discussions about modesty within the community. The picture, which featured Asbury alongside fellow artist Forrest Frank and a friend named Tony, was shared during their tour but soon became a topic of debate.
Asbury addressed the situation through an Instagram video, explaining that the intention behind the photo was purely to highlight the health and fitness progress they made while on the road. Reflecting on the snapshot, Asbury stated, “Honestly, I didn’t think much of it. My heart was just to share highlights of the culture that we were [experiencing] on the road. … It was about mind, body, soul, health.”
He expressed regret over any offense the photo may have caused, saying, “There was no intention for anyone to stumble or be a block of offense at all,” and acknowledged the online controversy surrounding it.
The decision to delete the picture was mutual among the three, as they wished to avoid it being a potential “stumbling block” for others. Asbury elaborated, “I realize a lot of different people share a lot of different opinions on modesty, and maybe one day we’ll weigh in on that, but for now, we just want to go ahead and take that down.”
Clarifying the source of the photo, Asbury mentioned, “I posted that photo. It was from my account, so lay off my boy,” exonerating Frank from any responsibility.
With a humble apology, Asbury conveyed his intentions clearly: “I just want to humbly, before everyone, say ‘I’m sorry.’ I didn’t want it to be a thing and didn’t want it to offend anyone at all. It’s down. It’s gone. Push on toward the end goal of loving Jesus with humility.”
The contentious photo was part of a collection documenting Asbury’s tour with Forrest Frank and other artists, named “The Jesus Generation Tour.” This tour, aimed at delivering “a powerful night of music, worship and community,” covered 29 cities, featuring Frank as the main performer, with Asbury leading worship and Tori Kelly introducing Frank to the audience.
The Jesus Generation Tour began on June 1 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and wrapped up on August 1 in Arlington, Texas, making stops in 22 states.
