In an era where lasting marriages seem increasingly rare, one South Dakota couple’s enduring bedtime ritual offers a glimpse into the power of daily devotion. For half a century, Don and Marilyn Barnett of Sioux Falls have maintained a touching tradition that has helped sustain their 68-year marriage through life’s ups and downs.
A musical expression of love
Each night, 94-year-old Don poses the same question to Marilyn, his 93-year-old wife: “Want a song?” When she agrees, he takes his place beside her and serenades her, continuing a practice that began 50 years ago. “I just look forward to it,” Marilyn told CBS News, adding warmly, “And he has a beautiful voice.”
For Don, this nightly ritual serves multiple purposes beyond just musical entertainment. “I discovered a couple of things,” he explains. “First of all, it pleased her. And secondly, it calmed us. And if we had a disagreement or something before, it was gone by the time we went to sleep.”
Commitment through challenges
The couple’s dedication to their nightly tradition has remained unwavering, even in difficult times. When Marilyn recently broke her hip, Don maintained their musical routine, demonstrating the depth of their “in sickness and in health” vows. Their son Doug attests to their consistency, noting, “I’m not aware that they ever miss it.”
Don believes that singing represents a deeper level of care than simple words can convey. “When you sing to your spouse, she realizes that you really care enough to go out of your way — rather than just say, ‘Goodnight, honey,'” he shares.
The Barnetts’ story shows how small, consistent acts of love can strengthen a marriage over time. Their nightly tradition has helped them navigate nearly seven decades of marriage, resolving daily disagreements and maintaining their connection through life’s challenges.
