“So Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.’”
Exodus 3:3 (NIV)
Sometimes, the extraordinary unfolds in the framework of our ordinary days. Moses was tending sheep in the wilderness, living a quiet, routine life, when he saw something that broke the monotony—a bush engulfed in flames yet unscathed by the fire. This unusual sight drew him closer. What looked like a mere curiosity turned out to be a profound moment of encounter with God, one that would change the trajectory of Moses’ life and the course of his people’s history.
God often meets us in the middle of our ordinary lives. Like Moses, we may find ourselves drawn to something that seems out of place, a “burning bush moment” that stirs within us a sense of wonder or urgency. It could be an unexpected event, a prompting in prayer, or the quiet whispers of Scripture speaking directly to our hearts. In these moments, God invites us to pause, to draw closer, and to listen.
What’s striking is how God uses the ordinary—a bush, a shepherd, a familiar landscape—to accomplish the miraculous. Though Moses felt unqualified, God revealed His plan: to deliver His people from suffering and oppression. This act of deliverance foreshadowed an even greater rescue to come. Hundreds of years later, God would send His Son, Jesus Christ, to deliver the world from the deeper bondage of sin and death.
As we journey through life, perhaps we, too, feel inadequate for the tasks we sense God calling us to. But take heart—God doesn’t wait for us to be perfect or prepared. He works through ordinary people and seemingly impossible circumstances when we are willing to respond to His call.
Today, let us open our eyes to the ways God is moving in our lives, even in the ordinary. What might He be asking you to notice? How might He be calling you to come closer and trust Him for the impossible?
Let us pray:
Lord God, open our eyes to see Your presence in the midst of the ordinary. Stir our hearts to draw closer when You call, and remind us that You empower those whom You call. Rekindle the hope that through Christ, You are rescuing us and making all things new. Help us to trust in Your plans and to step forward in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
