“Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.”
Genesis 15:5 (NIV)

Abram stood under the vast expanse of heaven, pondering a promise that seemed impossible. How many nights had he scanned those stars, weighing God’s words against the ache of waiting? His question to God—“What can you give me since I remain childless?”—bore the weight of disappointment and doubt. But in the midst of Abram’s uncertainty, God called him to lift his eyes and see a greater picture. The countless stars symbolized not only God’s promise of descendants but also His immeasurable faithfulness.

Like Abram, we often find ourselves in seasons of waiting, with prayers unanswered and promises yet unfulfilled. It’s tempting to focus on what hasn’t come to pass and question whether God’s words can be trusted. But when God called Abram to “look up,” He was inviting Abram to shift his perspective. Those stars were a visible sign of God’s sovereign plan—a reminder that what seems delayed is never forgotten by the One who holds eternity.

We may wonder, like Abram, how long we must wait for God’s answer or question whether it will ever come. Yet God’s faithfulness spans across time, from His promise to Abram to the birth of Jesus, the Savior sent to fulfill His covenant of blessing for all nations. The waiting isn’t wasted; it’s where trust grows, faith deepens, and God works in ways we can’t yet see.

This Advent season, as we anticipate the celebration of Christ’s coming, we also acknowledge the longings of our hearts—the prayers we persist in lifting up, even when they seem delayed. Just as the stars reminded Abram of God’s promise, the story of Jesus reminds us of God’s unchanging love and faithfulness. When we feel weary, let’s look up, rest in His promises, and remember that God’s timing is perfect, even when it stretches beyond our understanding.

Let us pray:

Father God, thank You for being faithful to Your promises, even when we don’t fully understand Your timing. In our weariness and waiting, help us to trust You, to lift our eyes to Your sovereign power, and to remember Your immeasurable love displayed in Jesus Christ. Strengthen our faith as we wait on You, knowing that You work all things for our good and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
