“But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” – 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (NIV)
When you walk into a room where something fragrant is burning—such as a candle or freshly baked bread—you cannot escape its aroma. It fills the space, affecting everyone who enters. This is the picture Paul gives of believers: through Christ, we become the “aroma” of God’s presence in the world.
But why an aroma? Unlike words or actions, a scent is subtle and reaches people unexpectedly. It lingers, it evokes, and it awakens something within. In the same way, our lives, transformed in Christ, should carry the essence of His love and truth. As we surrender daily to God’s work in us, His Spirit produces qualities in our lives—love, joy, patience, kindness—that cannot go unnoticed. These qualities are God’s fragrance through us, drawing some to the beauty of salvation while also confronting others with their need for God, which they may resist.
Being the aroma of Christ isn’t just about doing visible deeds or saying the right things. It’s living authentically with a heart aligned to God’s. It’s how we respond to trials, forgive offenses, or care for the overlooked. These moments of faithfulness become an offering to God and a testimony to the world.
Still, this calling isn’t always easy. Some will recognize the fragrance of Christ in us and be drawn toward Him. Others may react with discomfort or rejection. Yet, like Christ, we can trust that God is faithful to work through us no matter the response. Our role is to live surrendered to Him, letting His aroma spread wherever we go.
Let us be mindful today of the “scent” we carry. Is it marked by the love and grace of Christ? May we rely on God’s Spirit to make His fragrance unmistakable in our lives.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of being part of Christ’s triumphal procession. May our lives reflect the aroma of Your love, grace, and truth. Strengthen us to live as faithful witnesses, drawing others to You through the fragrance of Christ in us. Use us to spread Your goodness everywhere we go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
