(Isaiah 8:20, NIV) – “If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.”

Throughout history, people have sought guidance in places that could never satisfy. The Israelites were no exception—seeking answers through mediums and spirits instead of trusting the Almighty. Isaiah warned them that such paths lead only to “distress and darkness and fearful gloom” (Isaiah 8:22, NIV). To pursue light by walking into darkness is futile; no dawn can break in such a night.

This warning remains relevant today. In an age of uncertainty, voices beckon us toward quick fixes, self-reliance, or alternative sources of wisdom. Yet none of these are rooted in the truth of God’s Word. Isaiah’s words challenge us to consider where we turn when life feels overwhelming—do we look for fleeting remedies, or do we seek the eternal light of Christ?

Advent reminds us that God did not leave us to grope in the dark. Instead, He made the first move to bring us into the light. In Jesus, the “Light of the World” (John 8:12, NIV), we see God’s initiative to rescue us from sin and despair, opening a path to life and peace. The dawn Isaiah metaphorically speaks of becomes a reality in Christ, who offers hope that nothing else can provide.

When we rely on the Word of God, it becomes the lamp for our feet and the light on our path (Psalm 119:105, NIV). In a world of competing voices, the truth of Scripture keeps us anchored. It directs us back to the One who gives life, even when the way forward feels uncertain. Let us commit to walking in this light and trusting His Word, for only there is the peace our souls crave.

Are our hearts open to fully resting in His truth? Let’s turn away from the shadows and allow God’s light to dispel the darkness in all areas of our lives.

Let us pray.

Holy Father, You are the source of light in a dark world. Forgive us for turning elsewhere for direction and comfort. Thank You for offering us unfailing hope through Jesus, Your Son. Help us trust in Your Word and walk in Your light, confident that You guide us into life and truth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
