“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Genesis 1:2 (NIV)
In the beginning, the Bible paints a picture of an earth cloaked in darkness and emptiness, an image that can feel both distant and deeply familiar. We, too, encounter moments when life feels formless and heavy with shadows—moments when hope seems elusive, and our efforts appear void. Yet, we see in Genesis an incredible truth about God: even in the midst of nothingness, His Spirit is present and active, hovering like a watchful artisan preparing to bring beauty and light.
How often do we feel stuck in our own darkness, unsure if things can ever change? The story of creation reminds us that darkness is not the end but the canvas on which God begins His most profound works. God’s Spirit has always been where things seem lifeless, shaping the void into something vibrant and glorifying. If the Creator can bring light to the cosmos, can He not also bring light to our circumstances?
This is especially meaningful as we enter the Advent season, a time of waiting for Jesus, the Light of the World. Just as God broke through the darkness in creation, Christ’s birth reminds us that God’s light pierces even the deepest shadows in our lives. No matter how overwhelming the darkness may feel, it cannot overcome the hope and renewal that God offers.
In our moments of struggle, the Spirit of God is near, hovering over the waters of our lives, waiting to create something beautiful. The same God who transformed formless emptiness into a flourishing creation is at work in our hearts and stories. With Him, there is always the promise of light breaking through.
Let us Pray.
Creator God, thank You for being present even in our darkest moments. Remind us that You are a God who brings light, order, and hope where all seems lost. As we prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus, help us trust in Your power to renew and transform. May Your Spirit fill our lives with a sense of Your peace and purpose today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
