In a recent interview, Danny Kruger, now a Reform MP, emphasized the importance of Britain embracing its Christian roots once more. Kruger, who shifted from the Conservative Party citing its internal issues, envisions a transformative and principled reformation for the nation.
Defection from the Conservatives
Kruger, who is a Christian, left the Conservative Party three months ago, describing the party’s brand as “toxic” and divided. He pointed out the party’s inability to enact significant changes, a sentiment he shared during a discussion with Liberal Democrat MP Tim Farron for Premier Christianity Magazine. Although his departure strained some relationships within the party, Kruger stands by his decision, believing the Conservatives couldn’t deliver the necessary changes for the country.
A Vision for Change
Kruger advocates for “radical, but conservative reform,” focusing on restructuring government to allow for impactful decisions. He stated, “We need to restore family life, empower local communities and renew the nation in our economy, culture, and defences. It’s about restoring democracy and putting people back in charge.”
Christian Values and National Loyalty
While Kruger avoided the term “Christianise” when discussing Britain’s future, he expressed a desire for the country to embrace its Christian heritage more confidently. He believes a society aligned with Christian teachings would be “a happier one.” Further, he underscored the importance of nations as fundamental entities, warning against excessive loyalty to tribes or supranational bodies, noting, “Nations, rightly ordered, are a good thing.” Kruger emphasized that God is a “God of nations” and not just individuals.
Faith and Political Challenges
Tim Farron, the MP for Westmorland, resonates with the tension between faith and political duty. Having led his party in 2015 before resigning in 2017, Farron experienced firsthand the difficulty of balancing Christian beliefs with leadership in a progressive political environment. He faced scrutiny over his views, particularly regarding homosexuality, a stance he publicly regretted altering under political pressure.
