Graham’s victory over Rep. Ralph Norman in the Republican primary runoff was confirmed by the Associated Press. This result sets up a face-off in November against Democratic candidate Annie Andrews in a state known for its Republican leanings.
Trump’s Endorsement: A Decisive Factor
Darline Graham’s initial political foray was as an interim appointee to her brother’s Senate seat, following his passing on July 11. Her appointment by Governor Henry McMaster came with an influential endorsement from Trump, who declared at a rally, “I’m doing this to honor Lindsey. That’s why I’m here.”
Trump’s support was substantial, with his super PAC, MAGA Inc., investing over $827,000 in Graham’s campaign. While Trump’s endorsements have had mixed results nationwide, they have generally fared well in GOP primaries.
Campaign Dynamics and Voter Response
Despite her lack of political background, Graham’s campaign benefited from her late brother’s established political machinery. Her message resonated with voters seeking a fresh face in politics, yet one connected to a familiar legacy. Ray Saldi, a voter from South Carolina, expressed, “I really liked her brother, Lindsey Graham. I just wanted to make sure that she’s truly genuine to the people of South Carolina.”
During the campaign, Graham faced scrutiny for her limited knowledge of national security, a point highlighted during a NewsMax-hosted debate. This contrasted with her brother’s reputation for strong national security advocacy.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Graham’s opponent in the primary, Ralph Norman, is a seasoned political figure with five terms in Congress. He embraced his role as an underdog and had support from Nikki Haley, who contributed significantly to his campaign efforts.
