When a driver suddenly collapsed from a heart attack on a Georgia road, a physician traveling nearby became the lifeline that meant the difference between life and death. The dramatic rescue unfolded on Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell, where quick thinking and medical expertise converged at a critical moment.
Dr. Idowu was driving when he observed unusual behavior from an SUV traveling in front of him. The vehicle maintained a steady speed and direction despite other motorists honking their horns in an attempt to alert the driver.
“People were honking, and he wasn’t responding. It was just going same direction, same speed. So I just thought something’s happening with that car,” Dr. Idowu said.
The SUV, driven by John Nimmo, proceeded to collide with a tree, then a dumpster, before ultimately crashing into a building. Nimmo had experienced a heart attack while operating his vehicle, leaving him unconscious and in cardiac arrest.
Immediate medical intervention saves a life
Dr. Idowu rushed to the scene and, with assistance from employees at a nearby Midas shop, extracted Nimmo from the crashed vehicle. Upon checking for vital signs, they discovered Nimmo had no pulse. The doctor immediately initiated CPR while emergency services were contacted.
“I was not expecting to do that, but like I said, it’s part of our training as medical providers to be prepared to do CPR in case you see someone in need,” he said.
When emergency medical technicians arrived, they deployed a defibrillator on Nimmo. “Eventually, he started breathing on his own, which was reassuring to see,” Idowu said. Nimmo was then transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
An emotional reunion
The patient and his rescuer reconnected nine days following the incident. Nimmo had been eagerly anticipating the meeting since regaining consciousness.
“We’ve been waiting for this moment ever since, nine days. I counted down. We communicated back and forth a few times. But it’s been a countdown, and I couldn’t wait to meet him,” Nimmo said.
The reunion was filled with emotion as Dr. Idowu used his stethoscope to listen to Nimmo’s heartbeat, confirming the remarkable recovery both men were witnessing.
“It’s not always that we see the outcome that he experienced in the timeframe that he did. So to not only see it, but to share the same joy with him and his family, as you can tell, it’s overwhelming,” Idowu said.
Nimmo expressed profound gratitude for his second chance at life. “Every Thanksgiving from here on out, every Christmas, every holiday from here on out will be because of you,” Nimmo told Dr. Idowu.
Dr. Idowu, however, emphasized the collaborative nature of the rescue and attributed the successful outcome to a higher power. “For all the circumstances that played through for me to be there, the staff at Midas to help bring him out, for the police officers that showed up with a defibrillator, for the EMS that was able to get him to the hospital, for the doctors there that took care of him, all of it just played out in his favor,” Idowu said. “And God really is the one who gets the glory for that.”
The extraordinary circumstances have forged a lasting friendship between the two men, with both recognizing the remarkable timing that placed a medical professional at precisely the right location when a life hung in the balance.
