Prominent Christian MP Jim Shannon Faces Assault Charge
Jim Shannon, a well-known DUP MP from Strangford, has been charged with common assault, leading to a legal battle over allegations involving a woman. The incident allegedly occurred on 1 October 2023, and the case was presented at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court.
Although Shannon did not appear in court, his legal representative, Conan Rea, communicated that Shannon intends to challenge the charge. Reports from the BBC confirm that his legal team is contesting the facts of the case.
The proceedings included a request from prosecutors to amend certain dates in the case documents, a move that Shannon’s lawyers opposed. The court has scheduled the next hearing for 1 September.
Gavin Robinson, leader of the DUP, acknowledged the party’s awareness of the situation for over two years, labeling it a “private dispute” within Shannon’s family. The party had initiated internal reviews but paused them once the matter entered the judicial system.
“It is a matter that is going to have to be determined by the courts, and from that perspective I am not going to either prejudge or add any further detail at the moment,” Robinson stated.
Shannon, who has served as the MP for Strangford since 2010, is renowned for his advocacy of Christian values and his efforts to highlight the persecution of religious minorities globally. He chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, dedicated to defending individuals persecuted for their faith.
Shannon has expressed his commitment to this cause by stating that he campaigns for persecuted individuals of all faiths, driven by his Christian belief in universal love. His political career began with his election to Ards Borough Council in 1985, followed by service in the Northern Ireland Assembly before joining the House of Commons in 2010.
