A routine maintenance job turned into a life-threatening ordeal when an electrician found himself stranded 130 feet in the air inside a sweltering metal sign, with no way to escape. The worker, believing he might not survive, took out his phone to record what he thought could be his final words to his loved ones.
The harrowing incident unfolded at a Petro Travel Center near Interstate 55 in Wilmington, Illinois, on a scorching July afternoon. The electrician had been performing standard maintenance work inside a massive sign structure approximately thirteen stories above the ground when he requested his partner to lower the bucket lift so he could retrieve water and a fan from below to combat the intense heat.
Equipment failure leaves worker stranded
When his partner attempted to bring the lift back up, it experienced a complete malfunction and became inoperable. This left the electrician trapped at the 130-foot level with no internal ladder system available for descent.
Without access to shade or hydration, conditions inside the metal structure quickly deteriorated. By 2:00 PM, the worker began experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion, including dizziness and nausea. He contacted his coworker below and requested that emergency services be called immediately.
Emotional farewell messages recorded
As the situation grew increasingly dire, the trapped worker pulled out his mobile phone and recorded heartfelt video messages for his wife and children. He later explained that the recordings were meant to ensure his family would know how much he loved them if he didn’t survive the ordeal. He described them as a goodbye without actually saying goodbye.
Rescue teams face height challenges
When the Wilmington Fire Protection District responded to the emergency call, they encountered an immediate problem: their ladder trucks could only extend to 100 feet, leaving them 30 feet short of reaching the stranded worker.
Emergency personnel deployed a drone to monitor the electrician’s condition while they worked to locate equipment capable of reaching the necessary height. The Illinois State Police provided an escort for a larger boom lift that was transported from Joliet to the rescue site.
Members of a technical rescue team used the replacement equipment to ascend to the worker’s location, safely transferred him to the lift, and brought him back to ground level. The entire rescue operation lasted six hours, and remarkably, the electrician was uninjured.
Extreme heat posed severe risks
The dangers faced by the trapped worker were substantial. Confined inside a metal structure on a hot summer day created oven-like conditions, with temperatures likely exceeding 100 degrees. Extended exposure to such extreme heat without water access can lead to severe heatstroke, organ failure, or loss of consciousness.
