What should have been a picture-perfect moment on a Michigan ski resort’s towering suspension bridge quickly became a nerve-wracking search-and-rescue mission when an engagement ring tumbled 118 feet into the snowy darkness below. Thanks to an unexpected hero with the right tools at the right time, a nearly disastrous proposal turned into an unforgettable love story.
Trevor Van Camp of Rochester Hills meticulously planned his proposal to Danielle Jenkins, choosing the stunning SkyBridge at Boyne Mountain Resort as the backdrop for his big question. The massive suspension bridge, which hovers 118 feet above the ground and is adorned with twinkling Christmas lights, seemed like the ideal location for a romantic gesture during their weekend getaway.
Nerves and an open grate spell disaster
As Trevor dropped to one knee on the bridge’s metal grate flooring, his nervousness got the better of him. “When I went to go get the ring out of the box, mind you, I’m shaken up, I look down, like not a good idea, and yeah, I dropped the ring,” Trevor said. The precious ring slipped through his trembling fingers, fell through the bridge’s open metalwork, and vanished into the night, landing somewhere on the snow-covered ski slope far below.
Rather than letting the mishap ruin their moment entirely, the couple made the decision to search for the lost ring. Resort staff granted them permission to scour the mountain, setting the stage for an hours-long hunt through frigid conditions and deep snow.
A stranger with metal detectors becomes an unlikely hero
For two and a half hours, Trevor and Danielle combed through the snow beneath the bridge, their search appearing increasingly hopeless as time passed. That’s when Pat Harper, the night shift snowmaking supervisor at Boyne Mountain, entered the picture. Remarkably, Harper had metal detectors in his vehicle and offered to join the search effort.
As the clock approached 10 p.m., the exhausted group was on the verge of abandoning their quest. Then Harper’s metal detector registered a hit. He dug into the packed snow but initially saw nothing. When he scooped up a handful of the white powder and examined it closely, he spotted the ring’s edge gleaming back at him.
“I kind of sat there for a minute and I was like, ‘There’s no way you just found that,'” Pat said, expressing his own disbelief at the miraculous discovery.
A proposal saved and a memory made
Harper’s willingness to sacrifice his evening and contribute his personal equipment proved invaluable to the couple. “I give big props and kudos to Pat for doing that for us, because he saved the day, he really did,” Danielle said, acknowledging the supervisor’s crucial role in salvaging their special moment.
With the ring finally recovered, Trevor and Danielle were able to complete the proposal properly. While the evening didn’t unfold according to Trevor’s original vision, the couple now possesses a one-of-a-kind engagement story they’ll share for years to come. They’ve even made plans to return to the resort during winter to properly finish their walk across the SkyBridge and fully experience what they missed during their frantic search.
The incident serves as a reminder that sometimes the most memorable moments arise from unexpected challenges, especially when strangers step forward to help turn potential disasters into triumphs.
