A simple act of compassion at a fast-food restaurant in Maryland has captured hearts after a manager dropped everything to assist an elderly customer in distress. The incident, which took place at a Chick-fil-A in Severn, showcases how small gestures can make a tremendous difference in someone’s day.
Manager Daryl Howard was in the middle of his shift, handling customer orders, when Mr. Lee, a 96-year-old World War II veteran and regular patron, approached him with an urgent problem. The elderly man had discovered a flat tire on his vehicle and was visibly shaken by the ordeal.

A veteran in need
According to Rudy Somoza, another manager at the location, Mr. Lee had barely made it to the restaurant safely. “He was shaking, almost in tears saying he barely made it to the store on three tires because one was bad,” Somoza recalled.
Though the war veteran had successfully parked his vehicle, he needed assistance changing the damaged tire. Howard’s response was immediate and decisive. “As soon as he finished his sentence, Daryl informed me he needed to help this gentleman right now,” Somoza said. “So, Daryl jumped into action without hesitation.”
Caught on camera
The manager completed the tire change in just 15 minutes, unaware that his colleague was recording the act of kindness. Somoza, who has worked alongside Howard for approximately five years, felt compelled to document the moment.

“His action of kindness was beautiful. Daryl has always been so helpful to anyone in need and deserves this recognition,” Somoza said.
Mr. Lee later returned to the restaurant to personally thank Howard for his assistance, demonstrating the lasting impact of the manager’s willingness to help a customer beyond his regular duties.
