This incident marks the third such encounter in Minneapolis this year involving federal agents. It unfolded around 9 a.m. on the South Side of the city as officers were executing a targeted operation on a man identified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as being undocumented, armed, and wanted for “violent assault.” During the operation, another man approached the agents, allegedly wielding a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
According to DHS, “The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted.” The man, carrying two gun magazines and lacking identification, posed a threat that prompted an officer to fire in self-defense. However, the man’s identity was not publicly disclosed by the agency.
Describing the incident, the agency remarked, “This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.”
In contrast, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara reported that the deceased was a 37-year-old white male, believed to be a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. “We believe he is a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry,” O’Hara stated. The man was known to have had only traffic violations with the police.
O’Hara further disclosed that the man suffered multiple gunshot wounds, possibly from more than one federal officer, and succumbed to his injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center. “We were not provided any public safety statement around the incident…” he added.
The incident adds to a series of violent encounters in the region. Earlier this month, Renee Macklin Good was fatally shot while driving, and Julio Cesar Sosa-Celia, a Venezuelan national, was shot in the leg during a separate altercation with immigration officials.
Reacting to the situation, Governor Tim Walz expressed his outrage on social media, stating, “Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.” He has reportedly communicated with the White House and urged President Trump to halt the ongoing immigration operations immediately.
