A unique collaboration has brought a new Christmas song to life, blending the talents of a former church leader with a renowned rock guitarist. The Very Rev Albert Bogle, who once led the Church of Scotland, has joined forces with Iain Jamieson and Graeme Duffin, known for his contributions to Wet Wet Wet, to create “Room at the Table”.
This musical endeavor aims to remind listeners of the essence of Christmas, promoting messages of compassion and inclusion. As Bogle explains, the song seeks to offer hope and emphasizes the importance of making room for others, stating, “We wanted to create a Christmas song that acknowledges the challenges people face but ultimately offers a beacon of hope and inclusion. The message is simple – there is always ‘room at the table’ and sometimes, we just have to make it.”
Bogle sees songwriting as a powerful medium to express faith and share the Christmas narrative. He points out the enduring nature of music compared to traditional sermons by saying, “Nobody listens to a sermon over and over again, but they will with a song.”
Reflecting on previous works, Bogle mentions last year’s “Angels over Bethlehem,” which served as a protest carol against global conflicts. This year, his inspiration draws from societal shifts towards populism and attitudes toward marginalized communities, such as the homeless and refugees.
Graeme Duffin, while celebrated for his role in Wet Wet Wet and their hit “Love is All Around,” has maintained a long-standing partnership with Bogle and Jamieson spanning two decades. Duffin’s commitment to his faith complements his musical career, further enriching this collaboration.
