Harry Potter-Themed Service at German Church Sparks Controversy

In an unconventional move, a Roman Catholic church in western Germany is set to host a Harry Potter-themed worship service, leading to significant backlash. The event, scheduled for February 28th, aims to provide a “magical evening” at Sacred Heart Church in Herne.

The church intends to transform its sanctuary into a setting reminiscent of the iconic “Great Hall” from Hogwarts, encouraging attendees to immerse themselves in the experience. The invitation extends to both ardent fans and newcomers, inviting them to gather among “candles, light and darkness,” which symbolizes hope. Attendees are encouraged to don the colors of their favorite Hogwarts house, magical costumes, or even traditional attire, known in the Harry Potter universe as “Muggle clothing.”

The announcement of this event has provoked a strong reaction from hundreds, who have voiced their disapproval to the Archdiocese of Paderborn. A conservative Catholic group, Christkönigtum, is leading a campaign against the event, arguing that it trivializes sacred spaces by incorporating “magical and occult motifs.”

“Our motivation is clear,” stated Kevin Mis of Christkönigtum. “We do not tolerate God’s houses being profaned by zeitgeist-driven — in this case explicitly occult and magical — events.”

However, the Archdiocese of Paderborn defends the event, emphasizing its role in evangelizing a society increasingly distancing itself from religion. “Familiar images and stories from contemporary culture can help to open up initial approaches to the Christian faith and build bridges to the holy Scriptures,” explained Isabella Struck, a spokesperson for the archdiocese, to EWTN News. Struck stressed that the Harry Potter theme does not replace Scripture and assured that the event maintains the sacred character and dignity of the church service.

Germany, like much of Europe, faces declining affiliation with Christianity. According to a study by the Weltanschauungen research group, 47% of Germans now identify as having no religious affiliation. In recent years, both Protestant and Roman Catholic churches in Germany have each seen a loss of around 580,000 members annually.

Despite the popularity of the Harry Potter series, it has previously drawn criticism from some evangelical and Catholic groups for its perceived occult themes. In a 2003 letter, Pope Benedict XVI, then a cardinal, described the books as containing “subtle seductions” that might distort Christianity.

Author J.K. Rowling, who has identified with Christian themes, has also acknowledged a spiritual gap, describing a “God-shaped vacuum” in her heart. Her work is said to draw inspiration from Christian themes such as self-sacrifice and redemption.
