Greg Laurie’s Evangelical Journey: Lessons from a Legacy

Over the past fifty years, Evangelist Greg Laurie has inspired over a million people to commit to faith, reflecting the impact of his global ministry. His life story, depicted in the Lionsgate film “Jesus Revolution,” highlights his spiritual journey alongside 1960s and 70s movements, featuring actors Joel Courtney and Jonathan Roumie.

Laurie recently shared insights with Christian Daily International/Christian Post before addressing the European Congress on Evangelism in Berlin. Among his reflections, Laurie recalled a memorable discussion with the late Billy Graham, whom he considers “one of the greatest, if not the greatest evangelist in human history, apart from the Apostles.” Laurie’s question to Graham sought guidance for younger generations, to which Graham replied, “I would remind myself to preach more on the cross of Christ and the blood of Christ because that is where the power is.”

This message resonates with Laurie, who aims to convey this simplicity of faith to fellow evangelists in Berlin. His decades-long association with Graham and participation on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s board have offered Laurie invaluable teachings not just on delivering messages, but on embodying a lifestyle of faith.

Laurie emphasizes the straightforward task of evangelists: “to preach the Gospel, to sow the seed and leave the result ultimately up to God.” He believes in the power of faith professions, acknowledging that not all last but still require dedicated follow-up and discipleship.

Distinguishing between an Evangelical and an evangelist, Laurie explains, “An Evangelical is a term… to describe Christians who hold to certain views such as we believe in the inspiration of Scripture and you need a relationship with Jesus Christ… and an evangelist is one called to proclaim the Gospel.” He stresses that while every Christian should evangelize, certain individuals receive a unique calling to this ministry.

Laurie underscores the value of humility in evangelism, countering the stereotype of overbearing televangelists. He insists that authenticity and kindness are pivotal in effectively sharing the Christian message, articulating, “if you want to win some, be winsome.”

Encouraging inspiration from scripture, Laurie mentions, “Paul the apostle calls the Gospel the ‘power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes,’” and stresses the explosive potential within the Gospel’s message.

For those questioning their evangelistic calling, Laurie refers to biblical examples like Moses and Gideon, who also struggled with self-doubt. He advocates for perseverance, stating, “God calls the foolish things of the world to confound the wise.”

Ultimately, Laurie posits that success in evangelism is measured by faithfulness rather than metrics. He aspires to finish his mission with integrity, aligning with the belief that divine approval is granted for dedication and not just visible outcomes.
